November 14, 2012This past weekend, we braved the rain to check out the annual UBC Apple Festival. Every year, around 44,000 lbs (20,000 kilos) of apples are sold to enthusiastic fans of this favourite fruit.
More than 70 varieties of heritage, new and “tried and true” varieties were available including ‘Cox’s Orange Pippin’ (we brought home a bag of this “crisp, aromatic, sweet” variety – yum!). And ‘Salish’, which is Canada’s newest apple, was officially named at the festival this year.
Also at the festival was the Vancouver Island-based BC Fruit Testers Association with nearly 200 grown-in-BC apple varieties. And, of course, there was also the popular apple tasting tent where you could sample up to 60 varieties of new and heritage apples.
The UBC Apple Festival is hosted by the Friends of the UBC Botanical Garden. We already can’t wait to go again next year!
What’s your favourite BC apple?
